CHAPTER 23

GINGER

I’m lying in our bed looking at Gerron. His back is faced my direction. We’re at home. Everything about this last hit felt different. Normally after a hit Gerron would be back within three hours with the money, but this time he didn’t come back until four o’clock in the morning. Where was he? With her?

“Gerron,” I said softly placing my cold hand on his shoulder. “You up?”

He moaned. “Naw.”

If he wasn’t up how could he answer? I stared at him, not saying another word because I didn’t want to fight again. He must’ve felt me holding back my anger because he turned around and looked at me.

“I cheated on you last night,” we both said at the same time.

My eyes widened. I couldn’t believe that he was being honest with me; at the same time I was being honest with him. And then it hit me. The pain in my chest. He fucked another woman. Did he want to be with her now?

“Who did you sleep with?” I asked.

His voice was deep due to just waking up. He cleared his throat and said, “Who you think?”

I closed my eyes and tears fell down my cheek. I wiped them away and sighed. “Ric? His wife?”

“Yeah.”

“I guess I shouldn’t be upset or hurt huh? I’m no better than you.”

“No, you not.”

“Then why do I feel like my heart is broken?”

He sighed. “We fucked outside of our relationship, Ginger. I didn’t want it to happen but it did. Maybe we needed to get it out of our system to realize we want to be together. I don’t know.” He shrugged. “If we can move past this maybe we can work.”

“Say I believe that, are you gonna be mad at me forever? Are you gonna always hold over my head the fact that I brought up Milli’s name when I had no idea that you were about to ask me to be your wife? Because that’s where our real problem started, Gerron. We been good up to this point.”

“We haven’t been good in months. That’s the thing you don’t realize. I always felt that you was holding the fact that I wasn’t him over my head. It just came out on the day I was about to give my life to you that’s all. I’m a man, Ginger. And I felt played.”

“But I love you,” I said touching his face. “I wish I could take what I did back, but I can’t.”

“You love me but you fucked another nigga.”

I frowned. “And you fucked another bitch!” I reminded him.

He looked at me, and his mouth moved like he was going to ask me something but he didn’t know how. I been with him long enough to know the question though, even though he didn’t say the words.

“No,” I said softly. “Not even close.”

“No what?”

“No he wasn’t better than you.”

“How you know I was going to ask you that?” he grinned.

“Because we kindred spirits, Gerron. And I’m not talking about some fluffy shit people say when they feeling some kind of way.
